Small batch and artisanal are not regulated terms in fragrance. Any brand can print them on anything. A perfume produced in runs of fifty thousand units by a contract manufacturer can legally be described as artisanal.

That does not make the terms useless. It means you have to check rather than trust.

What Small Batch Should Actually Mean

A genuine small batch is a production run limited enough that the maker is involved in each one. In practice that usually means hundreds of bottles rather than tens of thousands.

The consequence is technical, not romantic. Small runs let a perfumer use materials that vary between harvests. A rose absolute from one season smells different from the next, and at scale that is a defect to be engineered out. At small scale it is allowed to exist.

It also means formulas can change. Most large houses would consider that a failure. Small houses often consider it the point.

What to Check Before You Believe It

Do they name a perfumer? Artisanal production has a person behind it. If nobody is named anywhere on the site, that is worth noticing.

Do they state concentration? Vague language about intensity instead of a stated EDP or extrait percentage usually signals a brand that would rather you did not ask.

Do they name materials and origins? Specificity is expensive to fake. Brands sourcing genuinely good material tend to say where it came from.

How large is the range? A small house with forty releases is not making them in small batches. Something else is happening.

Is the bottle small? Small houses often sell 30ml to 50ml because they cannot justify 100ml at their cost base. A large bottle at a small price is a volume operation.

Why It Changes What You Smell

Mass produced fragrance is optimised for consensus. It has to smell acceptable to a very wide group, remain stable in shipping, and never surprise anyone. Those constraints produce competent, forgettable work.

Small batch work does not carry those constraints, which cuts both ways. You get more character and more risk. Some small house fragrances are genuinely strange. That is the trade you are making.
