The Oldest Perfume Tradition You Have Probably Never Bought From

Kannauj has been distilling fragrance for roughly 2,500 years. Grasse, the French town most people think of as the home of perfumery, got going in the sixteenth century.

Very little of the Indian tradition reaches American shelves, and what does arrive is often either unbranded attar oil of unknown provenance or mass market spray fragrance with an Indian name on it. Neither represents what the tradition actually is.

If you are curious, it is worth knowing what to look for.

What Makes Indian Perfumery Distinct

Oil rather than alcohol. The traditional format is attar, botanical material distilled directly into sandalwood oil. It behaves completely differently from a spray. We compared the two here: attar vs perfume.

Materials Western perfumery uses sparingly. Vetiver, saffron, sandalwood, kewra, jasmine sambac, oud and baked earth. Some of these appear in French perfumery, but rarely as the centre of the composition.

Earth and rain as a subject. Mitti attar, made by distilling baked clay, has no real equivalent in Western perfumery. The idea that petrichor is something worth bottling is a South Asian one.

Slowness. Traditional deg and bhapka distillation over wood fire takes days for a small yield. That constraint shapes what gets made.

What to Be Careful Of

Attar sold cheaply is almost never attar. Genuine aged sandalwood oil is scarce and expensive. A large bottle at a low price is fragrance oil in a synthetic carrier, whatever the label says.

Provenance claims are frequently unverifiable. Kannauj on a label means very little on its own. Look for brands that name their perfumer, state concentration and describe their materials specifically.

Also be realistic about format. If you expect an attar to project across a room, you will be disappointed by a good one. That is not what it does.

How to Start

Decide on format first. If you want something that sits close and lasts all day, look for oil. If you want something that opens, turns and projects, look for Eau de Parfum.

Sample before committing. Indian compositions often use materials that are unfamiliar to a nose raised on Western fragrance, and first impressions can be misleading.

Read the note list rather than the story. Every brand in this space has heritage language. The note list is the part that tells you something.
