How Much Should You Actually Spend on Perfume?

The Wrong Question and the Right One

Most people ask what a good perfume costs. The more useful question is what a bottle costs you per wear, because that is the number that decides whether you feel good about it in a year.

A 35ml bottle gives roughly 350 sprays. At two sprays a wear that is around 175 wears. A bottle at $120 works out near 70 cents a wear. The same bottle bought and worn twice before being abandoned costs $60 a wear.

The expensive mistake is almost never the price. It is buying something you do not reach for.

What More Money Actually Buys

Under $40. Usually Eau de Toilette concentration, synthetic materials, large production. Perfectly serviceable. Expect three to five hours and limited development.

$40 to $90. The designer Eau de Parfum bracket. Better longevity, more considered composition. A meaningful share of the price is advertising and retail margin.

$90 to $200. Where small houses and better material budgets sit. Higher concentrations, more natural material, more distinctive compositions. This is where most people find the best ratio of quality to cost.

Above $200. Genuinely rare materials such as real oud or aged sandalwood, or brand positioning, or both. Above roughly $300 you are increasingly paying for exclusivity rather than measurable difference.

Where the Money Is Wasted

Buying blind. The single largest source of waste in fragrance is full bottles bought on a description or a recommendation and worn twice.

Buying 100ml. Most people never finish a 100ml bottle. Fragrance degrades over years, especially with light and heat. A smaller bottle you finish is better value than a large one that turns.

Buying for an idea of yourself. The fragrance you admire in the abstract is often not the one you reach for on a Tuesday.

A Sensible Approach

Sample first, always. Two millilitres is enough for four or five full wears, which is enough to know.

Buy one bottle at a time and finish it before the next. A wardrobe of eight half used bottles is a more expensive habit than one good bottle a year.

Prioritise concentration over size. An Eau de Parfum in 35ml will outperform an Eau de Toilette in 100ml on almost every measure that matters. We explained the difference here: EDP vs EDT.
