Oud has a reputation problem outside the Middle East and South Asia. People hear it described as smoky, medicinal, animalic, sometimes barnyard, and reasonably conclude it is not for them.

Most of that reputation comes from one narrow slice of what oud can be. Traditional Arabian oud, worn undiluted, is genuinely intense. It is also not what most people are being sold when they buy an oud fragrance in 2026.

If you have been curious but nervous, this is the piece that should settle it.

What Oud Actually Smells Like

Oud is resin. It forms inside agarwood trees after a specific mould infects the heartwood, and the tree floods the wound with a dark aromatic compound to defend itself. That resinous wood is what gets distilled.

On skin, good oud reads as warm, dry, slightly sweet, and deep. There is often something leathery underneath and something faintly smoky on top. It does not smell like a campfire and it does not smell like incense, though it sits in the same neighbourhood as both.

The Three Styles You Will Run Into

Traditional Arabian oud. Heavy, resinous, worn close to undiluted. Usually the most expensive thing on the shelf. This is the style that earned oud its reputation, and it is the wrong place for a beginner to start.

Western oud. Oud used as a base note underneath rose, saffron, vanilla or leather. The oud is doing structural work rather than leading. Most designer oud fragrances sit here. Approachable, often quite sweet, sometimes so diluted the oud is decorative.

Fresh or aquatic oud. The newest of the three and the easiest to wear. Oud in the base with green, citrus or aquatic material on top. You get the depth without the weight.

How to Buy Your First Oud

Start with the third category. A fresh oud gives you an honest introduction to what the note does on your skin without committing you to something you may find overwhelming by hour three.

Test on skin, not paper. Oud interacts with body chemistry more than almost any other material, which is why two people can wear the same bottle and describe completely different fragrances.

Give it four hours before deciding. Oud fragrances open at their least representative. What you smell in the first ten minutes is rarely what you will be wearing at dinner.

Apply less than you think. One spray of an oud fragrance is usually the correct amount. Three is a decision other people in the lift have to live with.

Is oud a masculine fragrance?

No. Oud is treated as unisex across South Asia and the Middle East, where it has been worn by everyone for centuries. The idea that it reads masculine is a fairly recent Western marketing habit.

Why is oud so expensive?

Only a small fraction of agarwood trees ever produce the resin, it takes years to form, and wild agarwood is now protected. Real oud distillate is one of the most expensive raw materials in perfumery, which is why most fragrances use a reconstruction.

Does oud smell like incense?

They overlap but are not the same. Incense is drier, smokier and more ceremonial. Oud is denser, sweeter and more resinous, with a leathery quality incense does not have.

How long does oud last on skin?

Longer than most notes. Oud is a base material with very low volatility, so it tends to outlast everything layered over it. Even a fresh oud will usually still be present after six hours.

What should I wear oud with?

Rose is the classic pairing and has been for centuries. Saffron, vanilla and amber all work. Avoid stacking oud on oud unless you know exactly what you are doing.
