Three Notes, One Shelf, Very Different Jobs

Amber, oud and sandalwood get filed together under warm and woody, which is roughly as useful as filing lemons and vinegar together under sour.

If you have ever liked one fragrance from this family and disliked the next three, this is usually why. You liked one of these three and got sold the other two.

Sandalwood

Creamy, soft, milky, with a faint sweetness and no sharp edges. Sandalwood is the gentlest of the three by a wide margin.

It is the one people describe as comforting. It sits close to the skin, lasts a long time, and rarely offends anyone. Indian Mysore sandalwood is the reference standard and is now scarce and strictly regulated, so most fragrances use Australian sandalwood or a reconstruction.

Choose sandalwood if you want warmth without weight, or if strong fragrances have given you headaches before.

Oud

Dark, resinous, dry, with leather underneath and sometimes smoke on top. Oud is the most polarising material in mainstream perfumery.

It is denser than sandalwood and far more assertive. Real oud varies enormously by region and by tree. Most Western fragrances use a reconstruction that leans clean and slightly sweet.

Amber

Here is the thing most people do not know. Amber is not a raw material at all. It is an accord, usually built from labdanum, benzoin and vanillin.

It smells warm, resinous, slightly powdery and sweet. Golden is the word that comes up constantly and it is a fair one. Amber is the glue in a great many fragrances, adding warmth and body without a strong identity of its own.

Choose amber if you want warmth and softness and do not want a specific wood dominating.

Which One Have You Been Reaching For?

If the fragrances you love feel creamy and calm, that is sandalwood.

If they feel dark and slightly serious, that is oud.

If they feel warm, sweet and enveloping without you being able to name why, that is almost certainly amber.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is amber a real ingredient?

No. Amber in perfumery is an accord built from resins and vanillin. It has no relation to fossilised tree resin or to ambergris, despite the name.

Which lasts longest, amber, oud or sandalwood?

All three are base notes with good longevity. Oud typically outlasts the other two, followed by sandalwood, then amber.

Is sandalwood good for sensitive skin?

Sandalwood itself is generally well tolerated, but the alcohol base of a spray fragrance matters more than the note. Test on a small area first.

Can you wear all three together?

Yes, and many fragrances do exactly that. The risk is muddiness. Well built compositions give one of them the lead and let the others support.

Why is Mysore sandalwood so expensive?

Overharvesting led to strict Indian government control of supply. Genuine aged Mysore sandalwood oil is now one of the costliest materials in perfumery.
