The New Definition of Luxury: Craft, & Perfume

The New Definition of Luxury: Craft, & Perfume

For most of my life, luxury was easy to recognize. It had a logo- usually a big one.

The kind you could spot across a restaurant or airport lounge. The kind people saved for years to buy because it signaled something: success, status, arrival.

Luxury meant marble floors, velvet ropes, and packaging that felt almost too beautiful to throw away.

And for a long time, that definition worked.

But somewhere over the last decade, something quietly started to change. People began asking different questions.

Not “How expensive is it?”

But “Where did this come from?”

The Questions People Care About Now

Today when someone buys something truly special, they want to know the story behind it.

Was it handcrafted? Was it ethically sourced? Who actually made it? Were the artisans paid fairly?

You see this shift everywhere once you start noticing it.

A friend choosing a handwoven sari from a small weaver instead of a fast-fashion brand.

Someone buying ceramics from a local potter instead of a big-box home store.

Coffee drinkers asking which farm their beans came from.

Wine lovers learning the vineyard, not just the label.

Luxury hasn’t disappeared.

But the definition of luxury has changed.

The New Luxury Isn’t Loud

The most interesting luxury today is often the quietest. Sometimes it doesn’t even have a visible logo. It might be a leather bag made by a small atelier in Florence. Or a linen shirt sewn in a tiny workshop in Portugal. Or a ceramic bowl shaped by a single artist.

The value isn’t in recognition.

The value is in craft.

And maybe more importantly, in care.

Because in a world where almost everything can be mass-produced in seconds, the rarest thing left is something made slowly.

South Asia Has Always Known This

What’s interesting is that many of these ideas that people now call “slow luxury” have existed for centuries in places like South Asia.

Take perfumery.

In Kannauj, a small city in northern India often called the perfume capital of India, traditional attars are still distilled using methods that are hundreds of years old.

Copper stills, fire, sandalwood oil and patience. Lots of patience.

The process can take days or weeks to months, and it’s passed down from one generation to the next. This isn’t a trend. It’s heritage.

The same is true for block printing in Rajasthan, handloom weaving across India, or natural dyeing traditions that artisans have practiced for generations.

These crafts were never meant to be fast. They were meant to be beautiful.

The Most Interesting Luxury Question Today

For years the question was:

“Which brand made this?”

Today the more interesting question is:

Who made this?”

Because behind every truly special object is a person.

A perfumer experimenting with scent.

An artisan carving a wood block.

A weaver working patiently at a loom.

A potter shaping clay by hand.

Once you start seeing luxury this way, it becomes less about labels and more about human skill.

What Luxury Means at Mitti Parfum

When we started Mitti Parfum, we weren’t thinking about logos or trends. We were thinking about stories and how do we leave a legacy that would mean something?

About the scent memories many of us grew up with, rain hitting dry earth, flowers at weddings, spices in the kitchen, incense drifting through temples kept coming over and over again.

We wanted to create fragrances that felt connected to that heritage. And we wanted to do it with patience. Not by chasing trends or producing dozens of fragrances a year, but by creating scents that feel intentional and rooted in culture.

To us, luxury means taking the time to get something right.

It means honoring the traditions that inspired the fragrance.

And it means remembering that scent, like craft, is something deeply human.

The Future of Luxury

If you look closely, the future of luxury may not be louder or flashier. It may actually be quieter. More thoughtful. More transparent.

People increasingly want to know the origins of what they buy.

They want to support brands that respect craft.

They want things that feel personal, not mass produced.

And maybe the most luxurious thing in the world today is simply this:

Something made with intention. Something made with care. Something made with soul. This shift toward handcrafted luxury and niche fragrance houses is reshaping the perfume industry.
